What are codecs?

Codecs let apps play different audio and video formats.

Without the right codec, a video might play without sound, show a blank screen, or not open at all. Installing the missing codecs helps your apps play those files.

Are they already installed?

CachyOS installs common codecs for you. With the default installer choices, it includes extra GStreamer codecs and VLC plugins for playing music and videos.

You normally don’t need to install anything extra. Try playing your audio or video first.

Something won’t play?

Update CachyOS and your apps, then try again. If it still won’t play, check the app’s help for the format you’re trying to open.
